We Learn

We are beset with the responsibility as parents to weigh our options for our children’s education… Now it’s my turn to face those very possibilities. My little boy just turned five last month… and I must decide if this year is his very first for school, or if I should wait until next year. Which school? That is another serious question. Homeschool is yet another option. I was homeschooled myself, through the 4th grade on and all through high school. There are both pros and cons to homeschooling, but I personally believe there are some valid positives… I’ll be homeschooling Lucien for his first year, as a sort of experimental trial to see if it works for the both of us. We chose K-12 to guide us along the way… which is both a little scary and exciting. We’ve also enrolled him in some new activities, such as taekwondo (which he’s THRILLED over) and we hope for some piano or classical music training soon. As I’m writing this, it’s easy to feel a little heavy… I’m here already? This time came quicker than I could have ever imagined.

Thank you! (=^_^=)
Ah, I just typed a long comment but I guess I forgot to submit it before I closed the tab…
So, I was saying that the the Finnish school system is very much appraised all over the world and our kids only go to school when they’re seven years old. So, I would maybe wait another year if I was you. :) I don’t recall hearing any major advantages in putting your children to school at a very early age. I’ve heard from fellow Finns living abroad that it has been tough on the children (one family lived in the UK, where kids go to school at the age of four.) Let children be children. It’s a valuable thing and you can never get your childhood back.
I really like these photos, so cute!
Thank you so much Anniina! I definitely am happy yo hold onto him one more year at the very least… it’s always a difficult decision with these sort of things, but it helps to receive people’s support ^_^
Thanks love!

I am so thankful my parents homeschooled me! I went to kindergarten but was then homeschooled all the way through high school. The same for my three younger siblings. There were so many positives that I will be homeschooling my own children when my husband and I are blessed with them. :)
That is such a blessing to hear!!! Thank you for the encouragement ^__^

I wish you luck! These are the kind of decisions that scare me when I have children. But you seem like you know what you’re talking about and can weigh the options equally :)

Jealous of Lucien’s cute puzzle, I miss things like that. Personally, going to school was a rich experience for me as my social skills aren’t great, and I worry that had I been homeschooled I could have missed out on those vital opportunities to learn about how people work.
Yes, I definitely have socialization as a concern… but as long as I’m getting him socialization through other means, then I feel home-schooling is a better option for us. It will be hard work on my part, and I will only home-school him if I am able to provide the socialization he needs. I take him to the library and the park several times a week, home-school groups, martial arts class twice a week, church 1-2 times a week to name a few… so he’s interacting with other children and playing with them regularly :)
Much love,
Aya

Hope kindergarten for Lucien is successful. I’m finding that each year is more frustrating than the next at this point. Some days I feel like throwing in the homeschooling towel and stick Leto into a school when the next year comes. . .but then my husband tells me that I tend to miss things after I make dumb decisions (which I know that normal school isn’t dumb, but we both had terrible times at both public and private schools as young children). :: sigh :: What cute pictures, and it is lovely how much they are learning!
Yes, homeschooling is definitely a challenge! I’ve been doing very soft-core throughout this last year, and within the last couple months I’ve really turned up the heat… but it’s been hard. I’m working at night and schooling during the day. I sort of feel like I’m working to full time jobs at the moment, and it’s… well, running me down. I’m behind on absolutely everything and exhausted to boot. But at the same time, I’m just not sure if I’m willing to give in to the cons of public school… I’m sure you know exactly where I’m coming from on this and why… it’s hard though, no matter what decision we go with :(
